KilimanjaroThe saddle between the twin peaks of Mawenzi and Uhuru, this is day four
of our 5 day trek to the top. Jeff's favorite picture of the ascent. Gilman's Point, moonlit,
greenish, ethereal. 18,476 ft. above sea level. I f the caldera rim were a
tilted donut, this would be the lower point. Uhuru peak is only 200 meters
higher, but an hour and a half away. Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa, 19,162 ft. A high point
emotionally, too, since we were engaged there. We began our final ascent on day
5 at 11:00 PM under a full moon-lit sky, we summited at 5:30 AM, just in time
for the sunrise.
